Addiction Studies
If you want to make a real difference in your community and in the lives of others and be part of a high-growth career field, consider becoming a chemical dependency counselor. Because substance abuse touches so many lives, qualified specialists are needed everywhere.
Some of the workplace settings you might find yourself in once you have completed Peninsula College's Chemical Dependency Counseling program include nonprofit and private treatment centers, social service agencies, tribal governments, schools, government institutions, residential and outpatient treatment programs, hospitals, prison/detention centers, and community-based mental health organizations.
Some of you may even choose to develop your own private practice or choose to specialize in a particular area, such as youth counseling, domestic violence treatment, or treatment of mentally ill and chemically addicted persons. All of there are viable options once you complete our program.
Your Course Of Study
You can complete the Chemical Dependency Counseling program in two years and earn an Associate of Applied Science degree. Students are encouraged to enroll in either the Fall or Winter quarters.
Chemical dependency counselor competencies are attained through an extensive array of educational courses that include the classes you will need to complete in order to begin internships in chemical dependency agencies in the public and private sectors and to become a certified chemical dependency professional in accordance with current certification requirements.
The courses you will take are drawn from a broad spectrum that includes Counseling, Case Management, Psychology, Anthropology, Sociology, Ethics, Law, and Physiology. Internship opportunities are available in a variety of work environments.
If you are considering transferring to a four-year college or university to earn a bachelor's degree, you will want to complete additional course requirements for the Associate of Arts degree as well as the Associates of Applied Science degree while attending Peninsula College.
