English as a Second Language
For those students who are not yet proficient in the English Language, Peninsula College requires attendance in an innovative ESL Program composed of four levels: Basic, Intermediate, High Intermediate, and Advanced English. By integrating reading, writing, grammar, and oral language in theme units on a variety of cultural topics, the student will be able to achieve the following objectives upon completion of the program:
International English – Basic Level 15 Credits
INTL 084A, 084L, 084W A fully correlated ESL program including a Lab component of students who have completed a beginner level, with emphasis on pronunciation, speaking, listening comprehension, grammar, reading and writing. Pre-requisite: on-campus assessment in all skill areas. Non-transferable.
International English - Intermediate Level 15 credits
INTL 085A, 085L, 085W
A fully correlated ESL program including a Lab component which further develops and refines pronunciation, speaking, listening comprehension, grammar, reading and writing skills.
Pre-requisite: on campus assessment in all skill areas or successful completion of INTL 084 series.
Non-transferable.
International English - High Intermediate Level 15 credits
INTL 086A, 086L, 086W
Continues to develop and refine English pronunciation, speaking, listening comprehension, grammar, reading and writing, while focusing on the skills necessary for success in a college-level academic environment. Pre-requisite: on-campus assessment in all skill areas or instructor verification of completion of INTEL 085 series. Non-transferable.
English 90
English-Academic Writing 5 credits
Designed for students who demonstrate sufficient mastery of English language skills to be enrolled in some mainstream college courses, but who need to focus specifically on academic writing. This course prepares students to be evaluated for acceptance into ENGL 101. Non-transferable.
