English as a Second Language
For those students who are not yet proficient in the English Language, Peninsula College requires attendance in an innovative ESL Program composed of four levels: Basic, Intermediate, High Intermediate, and Advanced English. By integrating reading, writing, grammar, and oral language in theme units on a variety of cultural topics, the student will be able to achieve the following objectives upon completion of the program:
- Organize and write paragraphs on familiar and concrete topics
- Participate effectively in oral classroom communication
- Participate confidently in classroom interaction
- Read and comprehend both fiction and nonfiction texts that incorporate unfamiliar material and figurative language
- Organize and write essays, summaries, and reading responses
- Use oral language effectively to present and support opinions in classroom discussions
