Pirates 4th at NWAACC Championships

KENNEWICK - The North Division champion Pirates overcame a quarterfinal loss to Southwestern Oregon to go 3-1 at the 2008 NWAACC Basketball Championships at the Toyota Center Arena to bring back a 4th Place trophy. The PC men opened the tournament with an 88-70 win over Treasure Valley. Dominick Lozano led with 23 points, Jesse Bean had 18, Clay Greenland 17 and nine rebounds and Christian Harris added eight points and 12 boards. In the quarterfinal round, the Pirates struggled against a very quick and athletic Southwestern Oregon team and fell 89-84. Greenland had 23 points and 10 boards, Lozano had 16, Harris 15 and Bean 11. Next up was Clackamas and the Pirates rebounded to beat the Cougars 88-84 behind 21 points and nine assists from Lozano, a career-high 19 points and 14 rebounds from Chidi Antoinne, 17 from Greenland and 14 from Bean. In Sunday's trophy round, the Pirates overcame a chilly first half against Bellevue to beat their fellow North Division mates 60-44 to bring home some hardware. Greenland, who had 18 points and nine rebounds in his final game as a Pirate, was named to the All-Tournament Team. Lozano had 12, and Cody Smithson 11. All 12 Pirates played and all contributed to the 4th-place trophy. The 2007-08 PC men finished 25-8 (13-3 conference), went 12-0 at home and won the third North Division title in coach Stewart's six years at Peninsula.

PC coach, two players honored

PORT ANGELES – Coach Peter Stewart was named North Division Coach of the Year, Clay Greenland was voted Most Valuable Player and Dominick Lozano was named First-Team All-Conference, as announced at Tuesday’s North Division championship celebration at Peninsula College. The team will receive its North Division championship trophy, as well as the individual awards, at the NWAACC Basketball Tournament banquet Wednesday night at the Three Rivers Convention Center in Kennewick. “This is a very deserving award for coach Stewart and his staff,” said Peninsula Athletic Director Rick Ross. “His Pirates put together a remarkable run, winning six straight games in the final 14 days of conference play to steal the North Division championship right out from under Everett, Whatcom and Bellevue.” The 2007-08 Pirates went 12-0 at home, including the only blemish on the record of top-ranked Spokane (27-1). “We have the best fans in the region and they never saw a loss on our court,” Ross said. The PC men cut down the nets at both ends of the gym in a celebration Tuesday, where they announced the All-Conference selections, and then boarded the Black Pearl en route to Kennewick. Thus far in his career at Peninsula, coach Stewart has won 101 games, lost 69 with three 20-win seasons, three division championships and two NWAACC Tournament trophies, including a third-place finish in 2004 and a fifth-place run last year. Greenland, a 6-5 sophomore from Kanab, Utah, led the team in scoring with a 20-point average, rebounds with an 8.3 average, blocked shots with 34 and steals with 62. Lozano, a 5-11 guard from Anchorage, AK, led the team in three-point shooting with 94 threes, free throw shooting with a 78.9 percent effort, was second in scoring with a 17.8 average and also contributed 70 assists and 37 steals. "Both Clay and Dominick were a huge part of everything we accomplished this year and they had tremendous support from their teammates in putting up those numbers," Ross said. "All 13 guys have played a roll in getting the team back to the NWAACC Tournament, where we hope to improve on last year's fifth-place effort."

Pirates capture North title in OT win

EDMONDS - They say good teams find a way to win the close ones. If that's true, the 2007-08 Pirates are a very good team. Following two-point, last-second shot victories over Whatcom Monday and Everett Tuesday, the Pirates took Edmonds into overtime before winning by a more comfortable four-point margin, 90-86 Saturday night to capture the North Division championship and No. 1 seed into the NWAACC Tournament. It is the third division title for head coach Peter Stewart in six years at Peninsula and a magical one for his Pirates, who just two weeks ago, had slipped behind Everett and Whatcom in the division crown race. Clay Greenland had another double-double, with 26 points and 14 rebounds, Dominick Lozano added 23 points and Jesse Bean 20. The Pirates led 34-29 at halftime, but could not shake the Tritons, who tied the game at the end of regulation at 76-76, forcing the extra period. A PC loss would have created a four-way tie for first in the North, but the Pirates would have nothing of it, and rallied to win the No. 1 seed. They will open the 2008 NWAACC Basketball Championships against Treasure Valley, the No. 4 seed out of the South Division, at 2:00 Thursday at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.

Pirates take over first place in North

PORT ANGELES – Dominick Lozano drained a 12-foot jump shot from the baseline with less than a second remaining to lift the Pirates to a 92-90 victory over Everett Wednesday, clinching no less than a share of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges North Division championship. The win, coupled with a Bellevue loss, leaves the Pirates (12-3, 21-7) in sole possession of first place in the North with one game to go, a Saturday trip to fifth-place Edmonds. A jam-packed PC crowd enjoyed a tale of two halves. The Trojans ripped the nets from three-point range throughout the first half, opening up a 42-26 lead before the Pirates closed it to 51-39 at the half. That’s when head coach Peter Stewart and his staff went to work and the second-half game plan was executed as well as a game plan can be, as the Pirates went on a 21-0 run. They took the lead 52-51 on a three-point play by Clay Greenland and went up 60-51 before the Trojans managed their first second-half points, those coming on a pair of free throws by Dirk Snel with 12:54 remaining. Everett then rallied back, eventually capturing the lead 84-83 with 2:15 to go, before freshman guard Jesse Bean turned the tables back in favor of the Pirates with two putbacks and a pair of free throws that made it 89-84 with 57 seconds to play. The Trojans then closed to 90-89 on a three-point bomb by Chris Grounds with 21 seconds to play. Moments later, with the score knotted at 90-90, the Trojans turned it over on an inbounds pass and the Pirates had the ball under the Everett basket with 6.9 seconds to go. They inbounded it, got it ahead to a streaking Neah Bay sophomore Ernie Grimes, who crossed it to Lozano, who pulled up a jumper from the baseline and got nothing but net with .9 showing on the clock. Everett’s desperation shot was no good and the huge PC crowd went into a frenzy. Lozano led a balanced Pirate attack with 21 points, Clay Greenland had a huge night for the PC men with 17 points 16 rebounds, five assists, and four steals, Cody Smithson hit for 14, Grimes 13 and Bean 10. Dirk Snel had 29 and Grounds 20 to lead Everett.

Pirates knock off first-place Whatcom, 68-66

PORT ANGELES - Monday's highly-anticipated showdown between the Pirates and the conference-leading Whatcom Orcas lived up to the hype. With the score tied at 66-66 with 14 seconds to play, the Pirates got the ball into the hands of sophomore guard Dominick Lozano, who split the Orca defense on the way to the hoop and layed the ball off the glass, narrowly avoiding a charging call, for a two-point lead with seven seconds to play. Whatcom got the ball to their big man, Ryan Christianson for the last shot and his eight-footer lipped off the front of the rim and into the hands of a soaring Pirate rebounder, Jason Millon to end the hard-fought contest. Whatcom's defense held PC scorers Lozano and Clay Greenland to 11 and 10 points respectively, but it was a team win for PC with Christian Harris hitting five for six from the floor, most of those from 15 feet out, for 12 points, Cody Smithson fouled out with nine points and four steals, Cody Killian had nine, Jesse Bean eight, and Millon six. Harris, Greenland and Bean each contributed four assists. Rebounds were even at 29 each, PC won the turnover battle 19-17, the Pirates were whistled for 30 fouls to Whatcom's 25, and the Orcas shot 47 percent from the floor to PC's 44. The Pirates had to overcome 52 percent free throw shooting to get the W in a game that saw Whatcom go 29/38 from the charity stripe, while Peninsula was 12/23. The lead changed hands 15 times and was tied 17 times and the largest lead for either team was six. If it's possible for a game to be even bigger, the Pirates (11-3, 20-7) take on Everett in a game that could decide the division championship at 7:30 Wednesday on the PC maple.

One down, three to go

SEATTLE - The Pirates opened the final week of their season with a 90-59 romp over last-place North Seattle, dominating the Storm in most every category. The PC men outrebounded North Seattle 35-24, they forced 22 turnovers, while commiting only 10, and they outshot them from the floor, 57 percent to 44 percent. Dominick Lozano had another big night with 30 points, including a 7/10 effort from behind the arc, Clay Greenland added 17, and Cody Killian, Ethan Wilford and Christian Harris each hit for eight in a game that saw everyone play and 11 Pirates. The Pirates (10-3, 19-7) host Whatcom Monday and Everett Wednesday before wrapping things up at Edmonds Saturday.

PC men gear up for stretch run

MOUNT VERNON - The Pirates geared up for their stretch run with a 68-63 win over the Cardinals at Skagit Valley Wednesday. Dominick Lozano led the way with 24 points, Clay Greenland had 10 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists, Cody Killian added eight points, Christian Harris seven and Jesse Bean six points and four assists. The Pirates (9-3, 18-7) travel to North Seattle Saturday, then host second-place Whatcom Monday and first-place Everett Wednesday before wrapping up their regular season at Edmonds the following Saturday.

Pirates run over Olympic, 98-70

PORT ANGELES – The Pirates scored off the opening tip and never relinquished the lead en route to a 98-70 NWAACC North Division romp over the Olympic Rangers Saturday night. Clay Greenland led the PC men with 26 points and four assists, Jesse Bean had a college career-high 20 points, Dominick Lozano had 15, Ernie Grimes 10 and Terrance Stewart came off the bench to lead in assists with five. The Pirates led 48-31 at halftime and then opened their biggest lead of the game, 88-55, late in the second half. Rebounding was even, with both teams pulling down 44 boards, but the Pirates won the turnover battle 15-23 and outshot the Rangers 51 percent to 39 percent from the floor. The PC men (8-3, 17-7) are ranked sixth in the NWAACC and will go to work to solidify a playoff spot when they travel to Skagit Valley Wednesday and to North Seattle on Saturday.

Pirates slip into 4th in loss at Bellevue

BELLEVUE - The Bulldogs and Pirates are in relatively unfamiliar territory in third and fourth places in the NWAACC North Division following Wednesday's hard-fought battle at Bellevue that saw the hosts come out on top 67-63. In a game that featured eight lead changes and seven ties, the PC men had an opportunity to tie when Christian Harris blocked a shot on what appeared to be a breakaway layup in the final 20 seconds. The Pirates had the ball, the final shot and a chance to tie, but a turnover on the inbounds play gave it back to BCC and the rest is history. Dominick Lozano led Peninsula with 22  points, while Jesse Bean, Cody Smithson and Clay Greenland scored 10 each. Peninsula (7-3, 16-7) will try to get back on track at home Saturday against Olympic.

PC dumps Shoreline, 10-0 at home

PORT ANGELES – The Pirates remained unbeaten at home for the 2007-08 season with a 92-76 win over Shoreline Wednesday night. Dominick Lozano poured in 30, including 7/9 shooting from 3-point range and 5/5 shooting at the free throw line, to lead the Pirates. Clay Greenland, nursing injuries to his elbow and ankle, had 23 points, nine rebounds, five assists, four steals and was 9/9 at the charity stripe. Ernie Grimes also had a big night with 15 points and Jesse Bean contributed eight assists. The Pirates went out in front early, as Ethan Wilford hit a three and a lay-up in the opening minutes leading the PC men to 8-0 lead that they never relinquished. Peninsula led 44-40 at the half and opened it to 10 before Shoreline closed the gap to 62-61 midway through the half. The Pirates answered, however, stepping up the defense and shutting down a sharp-shooting, but otherwise erratic Dolphin offense. The PC men outrebounded the bigger Dolphins 30-25, they led in the turnover department 13-15 and the outshot their opponents, hitting 51 percent from the floor, 61 percent from 3-point range and 90 percent from the line, while Shoreline was 51 percent, 39 percent and 73 percent respectively. The Pirates (7-2, 15-6) were in second place behind Whatcom going into Wednesday’s game and will use a bye to heal some injuries this weekend before traveling to Bellevue on Wednesday.

Pirates remain unbeaten at home

PORT ANGELES - Home sweet home. The PC men remained unbeaten at home this season (9-0) with an 84-75 win over Edmonds. The Pirates came out of the blocks fast and looked like they were going to run the Tritons right out of the gym and into the snowy night. They led 48-25 at halftime and opened the second half with a hoop for their biggest lead of the night at 25 as a full house crowd was settling in for what appeared to be a rout. Edmonds than began to chip away and knocked it down to 10. Then, with time running down, the Tritons closed it to 4. Peninsula answered, however, stepping up the defense and then salting it away at the line, as Jesse Bean was 4/4 in the final minute. Dominick Lozano had his outside game dialed in Saturday, leading Peninsula with 22 points and adding 5 assists, Clay Greenland had his way with the Tritons down low, with 18 points and 7 boards, Ernie Grimes of Neah Bay had a big night with 14 points on 5/8 shooting and helping to seal the victory with two huge offensive rebounds in the final 1:30, one of those good for a putback. Christian Harris added 8 points and 8 assists, Bean 7 points and 7 assists, and Ethan Wilford, Cody Smithson, Jacob Green and Dion Serras had some good minutes off the bench. Chidi Antoinne, who went down with a broken bone in his foot back on Dec. 7, returned Saturday night and not only contributed 5 points and 5 boards, but also helped the Pirate defense. The PC men shot 57 percent from the floor and 76 percent from the line, compared to Edmonds 46 and 42 percent shooting. The Pirates (6-2, 15-6) host Shoreline Wednesday to start the second round of North Division play.

Everett hands PC men second straight loss

EVERETT - Everyone in the gym knew the Trojans were going to hoist 3-pointers and the Pirates still couldn't stop them. Everett converted on 17 of 47 3s and held on down the stretch to hand the PC men their second straight North Division setback, 95-94. Clay Greenland led Peninsula with 30 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists, Dominick Lozano got back on track from 3-point range, sinking 5/10 for 26 points and 8 boards, Christian Harris had his biggest game of the season with 18 points that included a 6/6 effort at the free throw line, 12 rebounds and a career-high 11 assists and Ethan Wilford chipped in 7. The Pirates (5-2, 14-6) host Edmonds on Saturday.

Orcas pin first North loss on Pirates, 71-61

BELLINGHAM - Whatcom overcame an early Peninsula lead to hand the second-ranked Pirates a 71-61 loss, knotting the North Division lead in a three-way tie between PC, Whatcom and Bellevue, all at 5-1. Clay Greenland continued to put up huge numbers with 29 points, Jesse Bean had 10 and Dominick Lozano, PC's 3-point ace, was 0-2 from behind the arc and held to just 8 points. The Pirates (5-1, 14-5) were outrebounded 39-33 and outshot 46%-36%. They travel to Everett Wednesday.

No. 2 Pirates hold off Seattle, 87-76

PORT ANGELES - The Pirates moved up to No. 2 in the latest NWAACC poll, but it took a career-high 36-point performance from Clay Greenland, playing with a sprained ankle, to get by an athletic Seattle Storm team that remained winless in North Division play Saturday night. The PC men improved to 5-0 and 14-4 with an 87-76 win over the Storm in a game that was in question until the final nine minutes. With 9:05 showing on the clock and both teams in pursuit of a loose ball, Greenland laid out on the court, flipped the ball ahead to Dominick Lozano, who laid it in for a 61-60 lead - one the Pirates never relinquished. Greenland finished with 36 points, 11 rebounds and 3 steals, Lozano had two big 3s in the second half to net 14, Christian Harris had 9, Cody Smithson 8, Ernie Grimes 8 points, 4 assists and 6 steals, Jesse Bean had 7 points and 4 assists and Terrance Stewart, Ethan Wilford, and Jacob Green had some good minutes off the bench defensively for PC. The Pirates go Orca hunting Monday at Whatcom with the conference lead on the line.

Greenland leads PC to 76-63 win

PORT ANGELES - The No. 3 Pirates used a gutsy performance by Clay Greenland, and a strong cast of supporters, to drop Skagit Valley 76-63 Wednesday in the Pirate gym. Greenland poured in 24 points, 8 of those coming on dunks including a monster ally-oop over a Cardinal defender that brought the huge PC crowd to its feet. The 6-5 sophomore went down with an ankle injury midway through the second half, but thanks to the work of Dr. Dirk Gouge and a big dose of Utah toughness, Greenland returned to collect 8 more points, including 2 dunks, to help the Pirates salt away the victory. Christian Harris had 15 points and 4 assists, Ernie Grimes added 10 points and 5 assists, Jason Millon chipped in 8 points, 9 rebounds and 6 steals and Dominick Lozan contributed 6 assists. The Pirates also got a strong showing from sophomore Ethan Wilford, who came off the bench and ripped down a couple of clutch rebounds, as well as a critical 3-point play in the second half. The Pirates outrebounded Skagit 34-27 and outshot them 50.8 percent to 42.1. Peninsula (4-0, 13-4) hosts North Seattle on Saturday.

Pirates hold off Rangers at Olympic, 71-68

BREMERTON - Clay Greenland, Dominick Lozano and Jesse Bean all finished in double figures leading the third-ranked Pirates to a 71-68 win over the Rangers at Olymic Saturday night. Greenland led with 19 points and 7 rebounds, Bean 17 points, 6 assists and 3 steals and Lozano had 16. The PC men went out ahead 18-7 and led 38-31 at halftime. Peninsula (12-4, 3-0) is home Wednesday against Skagit Valley and Saturday against Seattle. Pirate Pete's Week, PC's annual spirit week, begins Monday and runs through Saturday with events daily at noon.

No. 3 Pirates stop No. 4 Bellevue, 59-50

PORT ANGELES - The third-ranked Pirates used relentless defensive pressure to avenge a previous loss to the No. 4 Bulldogs Wednesday, making some early noise in what promises to be a hotly contested North Division basketball race. The Pirates went up 8-0 and then 21-7 before the 'Dogs could get their offense on track, closing the gap to 32-21 at halftime and eventually taking a short-lived lead. The Pirates responded, getting some help off the bench by Cody Killian, who was 3 for 4 from behind the arc, as they opened the lead back to 10 and held on to win 59-50. Dominick Lozano had another big night for the Pirates, scoring 20, including a 5/5 effort from the free throw line, including 4 huge FTs down the stretch, and adding 5 assists. Killian finished with 11, Clay Greenland was held to 9, including a reverse dunk, but contributed 9 rebounds and 4 steals to the winning effort. Cody Smithson chipped in 7 and Jesse Bean had 6 points, 7 boards and 4 assists. Next up for the PC men (11-4, 2-0) is a trip to Olympic on Saturday.

PC men open North play with 79-74 win

SHORELINE - The Pirates tipped off NWAACC North Division play with a 79-74 win over the Dolphins at Shoreline Wednesday, getting 27 points from Clay Greenland, 17 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists from Jesse Bean and 13 points and 3 steals from Christian Harris. The game was close all the way with 6 lead changes and 6 ties, including a 36-36 deadlock at halftime. The Pirates went up 70-60 and then held on down the stretch. Next up for the fourth-ranked Pirates (10-4) is a home date with defending North champion Bellevue on Wednesday.

No. 4 Pirates finish pre-season 9-4

PORT ANGELES - Once again, Clay Greenland was a human highlight reel and his Pirate mates rose to the occasion in an 82-67 come-from-behind victory over Columbia Basin Saturday night before a nice holiday crowd in the PC gym. Greenland poured in 31 points, including 3/3 shooting from 3-point range, he pulled down 15 rebounds, had 5 blocked shots and 4 dunks. Christian Harris chipped in 12 points with 6 assists, Ernie Grimes added 10, Cody Killian 9, Dominick Lozano 8, Jesse Bean 7 and Cody Smithson contributed 5 assists. The Pirates opened with a 13-0 lead, found themselves trailing 35-30 at halftime. The PC men then turned up the defensive pressure and lit up the nets at the other end, taking a 36-35 lead on an ally-oop dunk from Harris to Greenland just 54 seconds into the half - and they never trailed again. PC led 62-41 with 11:04 to go and had an excellent half from behind the arc, getting 3 3s from Greenland, 2 each from Bean, Grimes and Lozano and 1 from Killian. The fourth-ranked Pirates, who finished 9-4 in non-conference, open NWAACC North Division play Wednesday at Shoreline.

Pirates too much for Pierce

PORT ANGELES - Clay Greenland put on a show, scoring 26 points, pulling down 11 rebounds, blocking a school record-tying 6 shots and slamming home four dunks as the Pirates ran over the visiting Pierce Raiders 74-58 Friday. The PC men opened up a 9-0 lead, went out in front 36-11 and never looked back. Dominick Lozano also had a big night with 23 points and Ernie Grimes scored 7 off the bench.

Eastern Washington road trip rough on PC

MOSES LAKE - The Pirates boarded the Black Pearl in Eugene and traveled directly to Spokane where they would play a rubber match agasint the top-ranked Sasquatch on Tuesday and then round out the 7-day road trip with a game at Big Bend Wednesday. Neither game went well for the men of black and gold. The Big Bend Vikings came out on top of a 78-72 battle that saw the lead change hands 14 times. Clay Greenland led the Pirates with 23 points and 11 rebounds and Dominick Lozano added 13. Against No. 1 Spokane, the Sasquatch took apart the PC men in their third meeting of the pre-season, winning 73-43. Lozano had 11 and Cody Smithson 9 for PC in that one. Next up for the Pirates is a mini-tournament with games at 7:00 Friday and Saturday, Jan. 28-29, against Pierce and Columbia Basin.

Bellevue topples PC men in final

EUGENE, OR - The Peninsula men reached the championship game of the South Region Crossover Tournament at Lane Community College Sunday where foul trouble spelled their demise in a 65-54 setback to North Division rival Bellevue. The Pirates led 29-25 at halftime, but could not hold off the Bulldogs in the second half as leading scorer and rebounder, Clay Greenland, was limited to 20 minutes of playing time due to foul trouble and eventually fouled out with the score tied at 52-52 with 5:00 minutes remaining. Dominick Lozano led PC with 25 points, including 5/8 shooting from behind the arc, while Greenland, who made the All-Tournament Team, was held to 9 points and 6 boards. In Saturday's semifinal, Peninsula dropped the host team from contention with a 72-63 win over Lane. Greenland had 27 points and 11 rebounds, Lozano chipped in 14 and Jason Millon 13. In Friday's opener, the PC men beat Walla Walla 85-71. Greenland had another double double with 25 points and a career-high 18 rebounds, Lozano had 21, Christian Harris 11 and Cody Smithson 10. Peninsula, now 7-2 in non-conference play, travels to Spokane to take on the Sasquatch Tuesday and Big Bend on Wednesday.

Pirates rock No. 1 Spokane

PORT ANGELES - The 5th-ranked Pirates avenged a Nov. 25 loss to No. 1 Spokane Friday by knocking off the previously unbeaten Sasquatch 75-69 in the Peninsula gym. Sophomore guard Dominick Lozano led PC with 22 points, Clay Greenland had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, Ernie Grimes hit two huge 3s and finished with 12 and Chidi Antoinne had 10 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocked shots, including one down the stretch that brought the big Pirate crowd to its feet. The game was quite a turnaround from the Red Devil Classic championship game in Longview two weeks ago, when the Pirates were chilly from the floor. This time the PC men shot 51 percent from the field (26/51), while Spokane was 35 percent (23/66), thanks largely to a relentless Pirate defense. Peninsula improved to 5-1 and will travel to the NWAACC South Crossover Tournament, which gets under way Friday at Lane Community College in Eugene. Peninsula will open against Walla Walla at 6:00.

PC men 5th in first NWAACC Poll

The Pirates, who placed 5th in the NWAACC last year, opened in the No. 5 spot in the first basketball poll. Spokane is ranked No. 1. The Sasquatch have routed opponents by an average of 21.7 points a game with the closest margin of victory at 11 points. Whatcom is ranked second, followed by Umpqua and Yakima Valley. Clackamas and last year’s North Division champion Bellevue round out the top eight.

Pirates hold off Lower Columbia

PORT ANGELES - In a game that saw several major momentum swings, the Pirates held off Lower Columbia 82-78 Saturday night in front of the home fans to improve to 4-1 on the season. The PC men came out of the gates and opened up an early lead led by the penetration and scoring of sophomore Clay Greenland. As snow began to fall outside, the Pirate shooting chilled and the Red Devils rallied back to lead 44-38 at the half. The PC men then bolted back out in front, firing on all cylinders, to lead 74-54 behind some red-hot shooting out of Dominick Lozano, some great passing from Christian Harris and outstanding defense from Chidi Antoinne, Jesse Bean, Greenland, Ernie Grimes and Cody Smithson. Lower Columbia roared back, however, to close to within 4, but the Pirates used a three-point play by Bean in the final minute and then knocked down some free throws to close it out. Greenland finished with 26 points and 6 rebounds, Lozano was 6 for 10 from behind the arc for 22 points, Bean finished with 11 and Harris dished out 9 assists. Next up for the PC men is a rematch with Spokane, the team that handed them their only loss this season, at 7:00 Friday at home.

Pirates show vulnerability in final

LONGVIEW - Perhaps it was the teams' youth that caught up with them in the championship game of the Red Devil Classic at Lower Columbia Sunday, as the PC men fell to Spokane 63-42 to settle for the second-place trophy. The Pirates, off to a 3-0 start on the 2007-08 non-conference campaign, struggled to score through the opening half, posting only 13 points and trailing the Sasquatch by 20 at the half. The Pirates stepped things up in the second half, but could not overcome the early hole. No one finished in double figures, as Dominick Lozano and Jacob Green led with 9 each and Clay Greenland had 6 rebounds. For the game, the Pirates shot a chilly 30 percent from the floor and were outrebounded 41-25. Peninsula will see its next action at home Saturday at 5:00 against long-time rivel and perennial NWAACC power Lower Columbia.

PC moves into Red Devil final

LONGVIEW - The Pirates will get the chance to defend their Red Devil Classic title Sunday when they take on SW Oregon, an 81-79 winner over host Lower Columbia, following Peninsula's come-from-behind 82-75 win over defending NWAACC champion Clackamas. The Cougars bolted to a 19-6 lead over the PC men. "I was very disappointed with the effort at our start," head coach Peter Stewart said. "We allowed a very good team to do exactly what we did not want them to do, run the break, and get second shots. We were fortunate to still be in the game at half time." The Pirates turned to Mr. reliable, Ernie Grimes, to give the team a spark. Grimes came off of the bench with freshmen Jacob Green and Chidi Antoinne and immediately the Pirates fortunes turned for the better, as they trailed only 43-35 at the half. Grimes and Antoinne started with Jesse Beane, Dominick Lozano, and Clay Greenland to open the second half and they outscored the Cougs 47-32 to improve to 3-0 on the young season. "I was very proud of the guys effort in the second half," coach Stewart said. The Pirates were lead in scoring by Greenland with 18, Bean with 17, and Antoinne 14 and Bean lead all rebounders with 8. The Pirates shot 59% from the floor in the second half.

PC stops Portland in first game of Classic

LONGVIEW - The Peninsula College Mens basketball team upped its 2007 season record to 2-0 with a 76-60 victory over the Portland Community College Panthers in the first round of the Red Devil Classic Friday afternoon. The long drive to Longview did not seem to affect the Pirates as they jumped out to an early 14 point lead.  The Pirates patented pressure defense got the team some early buckets and Dominick Lozano poured in 5 3's to lead the team from the perimeter early. I was very happy with our effort early in the game," coach Peter Stewart said. "We had a number of kids battling a stomach virus and it seemed to show at some point in the first half.  We ended up using a lot of combinations on the floor tonight to keep some fresh legs. The Pirates lead at half time by the score of 31-23. The Panthers did not go away in the second half and did take the lead with a little over 12 minutes to play in the game. As pleased as I was with our defensive effort in the first half, I was just as displeased in the second half," Stewart said. "We started following our men all over the floor and we quit dictating the pace of the game. Lozano's 20 led PC, Clay Greenland had 14 points and 11 rebounds, Cody Smithson had 14 points and 9 boards, Jesse Bean had 8 points and 4 assists and Ernie Grimes chipped in 7.  Next up is a Saturday night game against defending NWAACC Champion Clackamas. Tip off time is 6:00 pm.

Pirates win opener, 64-61

PORT ANGELES - Sophomores Clay Greenland, Dominick Lozano and Christian Harris led their otherwise young team to a 64-61 season-opening victory over the 2007 West Division co-champion Highline Thunderbirds Friday in both teams' season opener. Greenland scored 23, Lozano 12 and Harris 10 in a game that saw PC's swarming defense force 29 T-bird turnovers. The Pirates also outrebounded a bigger Highline team 32-29. Cody Smithson had 5 points and 4 steals. The Pirates opened up a 10-point lead early in the first half and maintained that lead throughout much of the game, but Highline came back to tie it and the game was in question until the final minute when Jason Millon came up with a steal and outran the Thunderbirds for a layup to open up the margin of victory. Peninsula will see it's next action at the Red Devil Classic in Longview Friday, opening against Portland at 3:00.
