Pirates wrap up 2008-09 campaign
PORT ANGELES - Even dynasties have off years. The defending North Division champion Pirates, who have won three conference titles and qualified for the playoffs five straight years, closed out their 2008-09 season Saturday night in a tough 85-74 loss to Edmonds. The Pirates had trouble putting teams away all year - and they suffered the same fate on Saturday, leading the Tritons throughout much of the first half, only to fall behind in the second. Saturday's game was the final home game for six sophomores: Chidi Antoinne, Jesse Bean, Jake Green, Cody Killian, Dion Serras and Cody Smithson. Against the Tritons, Killian had a brilliant first half, blistering the twine for 22 points, including six 3-pointers. He needed only one three to tie the school record, but the Tritons clamped down the defense and held him to just two points in the second half. Cody Smithson had a good night with 14 points, Chidi Antoinne had 8 and Dion Serras 8. Jesse Bean, who was among the top 20 in the NWAACC in scoring and assists, finished with 7 points, 6 assists and 7 rebounds. The Pirates went 7-9 in conference play, good for sixth place, and 10-17 overall. Look for coach Peter Stewart and his staff to go to work to build a team for 2009-10 that will take Peninsula fans back to the dance.
