PRESIDENTIAL PROFILE

The College

Located in the northwest corner of the United States, Peninsula College is nestled in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains. The main campus in Port Angeles, Washington, overlooks the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the nearby city of Victoria, British Columbia, and has easy access to the Pacific Ocean, Olympic National Park, and Seattle.

As a comprehensive community college with baccalaureate-granting authority, Peninsula College is highly regarded by businesses, schools, and community partners for its culture of innovation, high academic standards, and strategic vision.  The College serves more than 7,500 students each year through its main campus, its extension sites in Port Townsend and Forks, its correctional facilities, and its online course offerings.  In the last decade, the College undertook an ambitious construction campaign to provide a welcoming environment centered on teaching and learning.

The Position 

The Peninsula College Board of Trustees seeks a high-achieving leader who values innovation and collaboration and who will ensure that teaching and learning remain at the center of institutional practice and priorities.  The president reports to a five-member Board of Trustees appointed by the Governor.  Candidates for the position of president of Peninsula College will be evaluated on their qualifications, experience, leadership qualities, and ability to meet the challenges and opportunities identified by the College community.  The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong record of achievement in scholarship, management, and educational leadership.

Qualifications & Experience

The Peninsula College Board of Trustees seeks candidates for president who have:

  • A doctorate from a regionally accredited university. 
  • Higher education teaching experience, preferably at a community college.
  • Five or more years of progressive senior leadership in higher education, preferably at a community college.
  • Implemented a planful and priority-driven approach to budget and resource development.
  • Demonstrated institutional effectiveness through systematic planning and performance assessment.
  • Acquired new resources through fundraising and public/private partnerships.  
  • Developed and maintained strong relationships with local and state elected officials, government agencies, business and industry partners, and community-based organizations.
  • Provided sustainable programming and services to geographically dispersed populations, including extension sites. 
    Worked effectively with a local Board of Trustees or comparable governance structure. 

Leadership Qualities

Candidates for this position should:

  • Embody the College’s Guiding Principles and model high levels of integrity, ethics, and transparency.
  • Facilitate the development of a shared vision through strategic planning.
  • Exhibit and inspire an energetic, innovative, and collaborative approach to problem-solving.
     

Challenges 

Candidates for this position should demonstrate the ability to:

  • Maintain high quality educational offerings to support the College’s broad institutional mission while ensuring fiscal stability.
  • Meet the educational and training needs of an economically dynamic and demographically and culturally diverse rural population dispersed across a large geographic area.
  • Develop and expand relationships to promote and support economic development on the North Olympic Peninsula. 
  • Adapt to rapid change, including changes in technology, pedagogical approaches, and enrollment trends.
