Academic Advisor's Role



Academic advising is an important part of college. Establishing a relationship with an advisor can help you achieve your academic goals as efficiently and effectively as possible. Your academic advisor at PC can be an educational advisor in a specific department (Student Support Services); a specific program (Worker Retraining, Workfirst, etc.); a counselor; or a faculty member. If you are pursuing a Professional and Technical degree or certificate, your advisor will be the director or a faculty member in your program.

REASONS FOR SEEING AN ACADEMIC ADVISOR
Your academic advisor can help you with:

• Accurate information on college policies, procedures, course and program requirements.
• Personal concerns that are hindering your academic success.
• Fears about doing poorly in college or struggling academically.
• An enrollment plan that matches your educational objectives and degree requirements.
• Career assessments and counseling.
• Concerns about whether you can accomplish your educational or personal goals.
• Academic success strategies, such as test preparation, test anxiety, and effective study skills.
• An academic plan that matches your eduational objectives and degree requirements.
• Course selections and registration for classes.
• College services, such as counseling, tutoring, assessments, or other support services you might need.
• Academic probation intervention and planning.
• Academic progress.
• Academic problems as they arise.
• Issues regarding your academic progress that you feel are important.
